Craving for the Word – Part 2

1 Peter 2:2, ‘Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation.’

We are saved. We are being saved and we will be saved. We have not yet received full salvation of our souls. Our spirit is saved right now. Our soul is being saved and our flesh will be transformed. All those who have received Christ must grow spiritually and this growth depends upon the intake of pure spiritual milk. We are not growing if we do not have the craving for the Word. Peter explains to us that we do not grow by ourselves. But the pure spiritual milk helps us to grow and gain strength in our spiritual life. It is the word of God that works in a believer and not his works and ability. It
is the word that transforms a sinner to a believer and it is the same word that gives strength to grow in his/her salvation. In other words, the word of God determines our salvation. So the more we intake the Word, the more we grow in it and vice versa.

Now the pure spiritual milk or the word of God does not only mean the
Bible. It also means the voice of God that we hear in our inner spirit. Bible is given to us but apart from this, God speaks to His child daily. God commanded Adam as to what to eat and what not to eat- that’s the Bible. But God use to speak to Adam and Eve daily. So we should not only have the craving for the written word in Bible, but we should also have the craving to hear His voice. Reading the Bible and hearing the voice of God must go hand in hand. Reading the Bible only will not take us to heaven, but hearing His voice and growing accordingly by obeying Him will make one live forever. So the backdrop of the above is that one should have the
craving for both to read the written word in the Bible and to hear His voice

How to hear the voice of God.There is no written formula of how to thear His voice but as per my experience in the Lord I have written below.

Now many of us have a doubt as to how to hear the voice of God. We have Bible in our hands which we can read. But how do we hear Him who is invisible? The problem with us is that we wait to hear the voice of God to sound like that of thunder and the sound of many waters. Some have gone astray and the devil has cunningly deceived them by making them believe that whatever sound they hear is the voice of God. To hear His voice, we must first understand as to how God speaks. He speaks in still small voice. He doesn’t speak loud, though in some circumstances, He does that. But for an obedient child, He speaks in still small voice through messages like this,
songs, posters etc. Just imagine- when do we speak louder? When one does not hear us and or when one is far from us. God is bit louder to them who disobey and are far from Him, but to them who lay on His bosom, He speaks in still small voice.

    Spend time with God-

We can sit in prayer meetings for several hours but when it comes to spending time with God alone, time seems to drag…We must cultivate the habit of sitting alone with God. Adam lived 930 years in the world, but if you ask him about the best time of his life, he would surely say that the time spent with God was the best among all. Jesus spent more of His time with His heavenly Father than with the people, while He was in this world. He spent more time talking to His Father and that’s why, the devil or people or situations could not overcome Him. When we spend more time with God, life becomes easier even during the storms. Like the Psalmist says “I set the Lord always before me”. What will be our life if we set our Lord always before everything and everyone? We are going to spend all our time with God in eternity. That’s why we need to spend most of our time with God while we are here in this world. So to hear the voice of God, we must take an effort of spending time with God alone.

    Hear well

– One of the beautiful gifts that God gave us is ears. It is very complicated organ because God arranged a system in our ears that can recognize 15000 different musical notes that’s why you can recognize the barking of dog and notes of violin as different. Our God is an awesome God. Sometimes our ears are so much filled with other things that we are not able to hear God’s voice. We stuff our ears with gossips, unwanted and beggarly things of this world. So when the Word is shared, we cannot receive it. I have a mobile which can take maximum of 150 messages. If I want to receive more messages, I need to delete the previously received messages. If you want to hear the voice of God, delete all the unwanted messages from our ears. In Mark 7:32-35, a dumb and deaf man was brought to Jesus. To heal him, Jesus took him away from the crowd and put both fingers in his ears – that teaches us that we should not hear anything that affects our spiritual life. After this act Jesus said ‘Ephphatha’, which means ‘to be opened’. He closed his ears and then said, ‘be opened’! Pray to God today that he may touch your ears so that you will not hear anything that leads your mind to darkness.

Now next, where do we hear His still voice?

We hear Him in our conscience or inner spirit. God speaks to our spirit because He is Spirit. God speaks through visions, dreams and through His appointed servants, but the best among all is to receive the word of God personally in our spirit. Many of us take interest in dreams and hearing the word of God through anointed servants – Even though God speaks through them, the best of all is hearing His voice directly. Tasting Him personally and daily is very important. No one can separate you if you personally know Christ as your savior.
Peter 2:3 says ‘you have tasted that the Lord is good.’ There is a sea of difference between tasting Him personally and knowing about Him from others. Peter who have seen Jesus’ transfiguration on the mountain does not encourage his listeners to put their base on dreams or visions but preaches them to have craving for the pure spiritual milk- that is the word of God.

How to recognize the voice of God?

How do you recognize your dad’s voice? It’s because of the relation with him.To recognize the voice of the Lord, we must have a relationship with Him. A sheep recognizes the voice of its Shepherd. Likewise, if we are His sheep and if He is our shepherd, then there is no difficulty in recognizing the voice of God. John 10:5, ‘Sheep does not recognize the voice of stranger.’ In fact, they run away from Him. The moment the sheep hears the voice of a stranger, it
runs away from him and follows the shepherd. The devil will cunningly try to trap you by his lies, but the His sheep will not entertain his word but rather; it will take his feet from the trap and crave for the voice of His shepherd.

Secondly, to recognize the voice of God, we must understand that God is light and there is no darkness in Him. God never tempts. He never lies. He never changes like shadows. Every thought/voice that keeps on changing and keeps on telling against the truth you heard is not His voice.

To be continued ….

The reason why we have lose the interest in the word of God because we have filled our belly with many other food around us but let me tell you the truth those foods will never help us to grow. They look and taste good but it kills the inner man.-

One of the scripture that inspired me is Luke 5:1 And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret.
People pressed upon Jesus to hear the Word this shows their urgency, their need and hunger. Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God. There is life in the word. No food in the world comes with 100% essential nutrients but Word of God has everything that will make us strong, stand and run. God found that all mankind is half dead in the desert of sin so to resurrect this lost mankind a grain of wheat was fallen into the earth and died and that seed brought life to many lost souls. There is no other alternative and you cannot swap anything with the Word to satisfy your inner man. As Bread is needed for outer man so the Word is needed for inner man.

I remember my mother scolding me during my school days because I never use to have food from home. I filled myself with wafers and Pepsi cola. Wafers and colas will not give power but the food what she makes has everything for my growth. Are we also doing the same…are we craving onto something which is not food? We are spending time and energy onto something which is not food…we are spending more time in our jobs, doing extra jobs and overtimes. We are not drug addicts but we are addicted to Internet. C.H. Spurgeon said “Hours with world and moments with God” This is our condition we are spending so much onto those foods that will spoil. Isaiah 55:2 says Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. And again in John 6:27 says do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”

Both the verses have similarity… In Isaiah, God asks us the question and in John, He clearly gives us instruction. God is speaking to us in both the ways…He is asking us a question and he is giving us the instructions…let us respond to him today. Are we craving on food that spoils? Or are we craving on eternal food?
When a baby is born he should cry. If he does not cry then doctors will come into two conclusions

1) Baby has some problem or 2) Baby is dead.

If we don’t have the craving for the word there are only two conclusions.

1) we have some problem that need to be sorted out with God soon
2) We are dead in spirit.

We may be a regular bible reader but one can do that as a custom also. Regular bible readers may not have the craving.
What can I do to crave for the word of God?
Before telling that we must understand few points that will give us to desire for the word.
1) God is our provider ( Give us our daily bread)
2) We are in need
3) We cannot swap anything with the Word for the growth of our inner man
4) We are dead if we do not eat the Word
5) Word is our weapon
You can have many other points but if we understand the above five it will give you the importance of Word in our life and thereafter a crying heart desiring for the pure milk.
If you ask me how to crave for the word of God? I will say
As new born baby. He doesn’t have grammar, mother tongue or beautiful quotes, he is blameless but he knows one thing that he is hungry so he will cry. If you are in need you will cry and God will utter His word to your inner man’s system.
Let us not crave for the spoil food but let us crave for the right food.

Lesson from the life of Simeon

We will have a study about the life of Simeon who waited for the Lord’s Christ for that I have taken a portion from Luke 2:25-29 and splitted into 7 points.

Verse 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon

Bible is written for Man so it tells us about a Man Simeon. He was a Man that means he had nature like ours but he was different. God does not point everybody but He points very few people and says “He is my MAN” yes! God is looking for a Man who will stand for him in this compromising generation. Simeon was one of them who did not compromise to the system of this world but waited for the messiah.

Verse 25 ….. Who was righteous and devout.

A ) He was Righteous – One of the first thing God want from us is that we should be righteous. Simeon was not perfect but he was righteous. Righteous or righteousness means right ways. We may justify our crooked ways as right ways but that is not valid in the eyes of the Lord. It is not necessary that you will be a righteous man if you have head knowledge about God. Walking with God is connected to relationship and not just knowledge. God is pleased when we walk in His path and that’s the time he makes covenant with us. God said to Abram to practice righteousness before Him (Gen 17:1) and then He will come to an agreement with him. Without practicing righteousness God does not agree with us.

B) He was Devout – In other words he was not carnal. He did not put his leg on two boats. Loving the world on weekdays and loving the Lord on Sundays was not in his dictionary. Bible says he was spiritual and dedicated.

Verse 25 …He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him

A) He waited – Bible says he was waiting for the Messiah. The word ‘waiting’ is present tense. There were many Israelites who waited for Messiah for long but they all lost hope but among them Simeon was different because he did not lose hope, He was still waiting for Christ. I know you will agree with me that now a day’s many believers also lost hope about the second coming of Christ but I thank God for few who are still waiting.

B) Holy Spirit was upon him – Bible does not say Simeon received Holy Spirit few years back but it says Spirit was upon him at that moment. You might have filled by the Holy Spirit 10 yrs back but how is your condition now? God wants to see what we are right now not what we were before. Today churches are filled with believers who claim that they were something but look at Simeon, Spirit was still working on him. Filling in Spirit is not one time process but we should do it every time. We need immeasurable power of Spirit to lead a victorious Christian life. Let us examine that do we still have the power of Spirit or are we living in delusion.

Verse 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

A) He received revelation time to time- This is very necessary for every believer. Our ears and heart should to be circumcised for this. Elijah could survive in the severe draught not because of the bread and water but he received revelation from time to time, Abraham did not kill Isaac because he received the word “Abraham Abraham “Do not lay a hand on the boy”. Have we received revelation this month or this week or this day from the Lord? Remember, Lord’s Prayer…Give us our daily bread! If you stop seeking, you will stop receiving and if you stop receiving, you will faint and fall. There was not widespread revelation at time of Eli Priest that’s why he fell down and died at the moment.

B) He was Man of faith – We must understand that Simeon did not receive an ordinary revelation because he does not know how long he should wait for Christ because he was already too old. His body said he was weak and will die soon but his faith in God said “I will not die until I see Christ”. He was alive because God’s promise was upon him. Do we give more important to facts or God’s word? Let us learn from this man.

■Verse 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.
A) He Moved in Spirit – Simeon moved in Spirit that’s why he could recognize Baby Jesus from many children who came in the temple to fulfill the custom of law. When we move in Spirit we will never fall, we will recognize God’s will and His provision. We think that we can move in Spirit only when we are in the church but Simeon came to church by the Spirit. Paul says that ” The Spirit of God is in us” …while we are in Church or not in Church we must move in Spirit. Let us make every move according to the voice of Spirit.

Verse 29 Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

B) He was not of this world – We can understand this from verse 29 As soon as Simeon received Christ in his arms his next statement was a request to depart from this world in peace. He does not have any other desires because all his desire was to see Christ. A person who receives Christ and who have received the knowledge about Christ will understand that they have nothing in the world- they will plainly proclaim that they are strangers. Today we are engrossed in many things in such a way that even though we have received the greatest gift in our hands (Christ) we still desire and run for beggarly things of this world. A person who cannot proclaim as stranger to this world cannot be the citizen of heaven.

Let us learn a lesson from the life of this blessed man of God

May God bless you !
Your brother in Christ
