Genesis 4:4-5 And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, but He did not respect Cain and his offering.
Reading this verse one may think, God did favoritism but when we go more detail we will learn that God loves everyone equally. Though God accepted Abel but He gave several chances to Cain to repent what he did. There are some reason why God respected Abel and his offering. Though we do not have more detail about Abel but let us glean some important spiritual points from the given information about him in the bible.
God was so pleased with His creation and said “It is good”. One of the main reasons why man was made so that he will have fellowship and please the creator but Eve was deceived and Adam sinned due to this they fall short from the fellowship of God and from pleasing Him. They were cast out from the Garden, cursed and pain overshadowed them, they toiled for the food. During her disgrace Eve gave birth to Cain and said “I have got a Man from the Lord” and then she delivered Abel. We don’t know about the life of Abel but one thing is sure he did not repeat the mistake of his father. This is for sure that Adam has told to his sons about his sweet fellowship with God in the Garden of Eden. He might have told them how God walked in the evening and spoke to them daily. He has told them about the fruitful Garden. Hearing the goodness of God one son Abel decided to have fellowship with this God, He decided to bring smile on the face of God. He knew his father has lost the fellowship with Almighty God that’s why he does not want to repeat the same story. Though God cast Adam out from his presence but He drew his son Abel into Him. What did Abel do for that? I would like to draw three points which the Spirit of God taught me in my prayer.
1) Abel lived right – How do we know that Abel lived right?Gen 4:4 And the Lord respected Abel. In simpler words God accepted Abel. See the verse does not say God accepted Abel’s offering first but He accepted the individual first. God will accept our offering only when we WALK BLAMELESSELY AND UPRIGHTLY BEFORE HIM. 1 John 3:12 says the actions of Abel was righteous but his brother were evil. The offeror is accepted first and then the offerings. The main factor we need is God’s acceptance and for that we need to serve only Him and please only Him. When we please only God we may not please all men. Pleasing only God is a challenge because you are flowing against the flow and you will find very few agree with you. It needs effort, it needs patience and it is a pain. No one can please God and men together. Abel might have displeased his parents and even his own brother because he wanted to please only God. Joseph was a slave who was under Potiphar and he must obey in every ways but when potiphar’s wife told him to lay with her…Joseph disappointed her because he wanted to please God. Joseph was a slave under potiphar and not under sin.Why Jesus was rejected from his own brethren because he never pleased them. He pleased His Father. Are we pleasing ONLY God? Will God respect us? These are the big questions that we need to think seriously.
2)Abel did right – how do we know that Abel did right? For that we need to check what God spoke to Cain.Genesis 4:6-7 “Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.”Why Cain was rejected because he did not do right but Abel was accepted since he did the right. Now what is that right Abel did so that God respected him? Hebrew 11:4 says, By faith Abel offered unto God.
If Abel offered by faith, Cain offered by sight because opposite of Faith is sight. Now Faith comes from hearing and hearing by the word of God. Abel obeyed the word of God that’s why he could do right. Now what is the right thing he did? He offered a blood offering that is ATONEMENT FOR SIN because without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. He brought the firstlings of sheep with the fat and offered it unto God. Bible says, in Proverbs 28:13 He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy. I should say Abel learned from his father’s mistake. He did not hide his sin but rather came before God for atonement of his sin. God saw the right motives of Abel and that’s why his offering was more excellent than his brother so God commended him as righteous and spoke well of his offerings ( Hebrews 11:4).
3) Abel thought right – Bible says in 1 John 3:12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother, And why slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous. What we think is what we do but there are people who think wrong but pretend to do things right but their HYPOCRISY will be revealed sooner or later. Works of Cain was evil because his MIND was corrupted by evil. We must understand that our MIND is the battlefield. Our enemy and the flesh always want to rule our MIND. We must always submit to the SPIRIT of God then only our spirit will subdue the THOUGHT of evil and flesh. How do we know Abel thought right? Because his works was of RIGHTEOUS. No one can think EVIL and work RIGHTEOUSLY. Cain’s actions were evil because instead of looking at GOD he was looking at HIS BROTHER. He carried hatred, rebellious, envy and all evil in his mind.
Apostle Paul says in Philippians 4:8-9 finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Paul teaches us to THINK right and PRACTICE right then the God of peace will be with us. And such person will REJOICE ALWAYS!
The same Paul says in 2 Corinthians 11:3 but I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. There are chances of getting deceived if we do not reform our minds with the WORD OF GOD continuously (Romans 12:1-2). How EVE was deceived? Eve was deceived by serpent’s cunning, her mind was led astray from what she heard about the tree of life…Serpent came when EVE was alone. Yes, devil tempts more when you are IDLE. She was away from her husband- We are the bride of Christ …if eve was busy with her husband then devil would never had a chance to get hold of her likewise let us be BUSY with our bridegroom JESUS CHRIST, thinking about HIM day and night and all the days our life then devil will never have a space to squeeze in to entice us away from the SINCERE love and PURE DEVOTION to Christ our Lord.
Now let’s go descending order. Abel thought right, did right and that’s why he could live right. Let us LIVE THIS LIFE BEFORE HIM and not before MEN. We need only few hours to die for Christ but LIVING for Christ is what He desires.Let the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen
