Luke 6:12-16 NKJV Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; and from them He chose twelve whom He also named apostles: Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
Greetings to all brethren who are in Jesus Christ and eagerly waiting for His coming in the clouds. Grace and peace be multiplied from our God and His only Son Jesus Christ.Prayer is not only in Christians but in every religion. Christians are not the only one to pray but I believe there is no one in the world who does not pray and last Jesus was not the only person who said to pray but there are several others who spoke on this subject but there is sea difference in all other prayers and believers’ prayer. God hears those who call upon Him. This is the secret…everyone is not calling God though they are calling in the name of God. Even the prophets of Baal thought they are calling God but they were sadly mistaken but Elijah called God and He replied him with fire. So does God do favoritism? No! He is the respecter of His principles and He there is no partiality in Him. God hears them who sincerely seek Him and call Him by faith. We can be sure because we learn this attribute of God through Jesus Christ. Son has declared the Father unto us… Jesus never cast anyone out. He heard and helped those who sought him diligently. He was available to all not only to Jews but for gentiles. One Day the disciples were inspired when they saw Jesus praying and requested him to teach them how to pray. Jesus gave them the pattern for prayer and told them to pray in that manner. He did not meant to repeat those words one after the other. God should inspire us for praying and Holy Spirit should help us to utter and that’s were the heaven opens. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of prayer because I don’t think no one ever prayed like Jesus. I have taken a passage from Luke’s account where we see Jesus Christ prayed whole night and next day in the morning he called his disciples. Let us learn and get inspired through his prayer.
First of all…
Jesus had personal prayer
We can pray with the group of people and bible teaches us to gather in one mind and spirit for prayer but here we see Jesus went out to the mountain to pray.It is easy to pray in group but hard to pray in alone. As per my understanding all are not spending much time in personal prayer. The earthly life of Jesus tells us that personal prayer is vital than we think. The problem with us is that the thing which Jesus took seriously we took it lightly. I believe the one who has personal relationship with God can only have personal prayer because our personal prayer is the proof of that relation. Imagine, where do we spend most of our personal time? That is how a child of God is recognized. Bible tells a believer of God is like a tree. If we are a tree then the roots are our personal life. No one can see the root but everyone can see its outcome. It is very much important to know where our roots are going. Is it going to the spring or to the something which is not the spring? Bible says, in Genesis 49:22-23 Joseph is a fruitful bough, A fruitful bough by a spring. His branches run over the wall. The archers have bitterly grieved him. Shot at him and hated him. Even though archers bitterly grieved, shot and hated him Joseph was a fruitful branch in front of them all because his root was in the spring. That’s the secret. His personal life was controlled by the Spirit of God that’s why he overcomes sin. We give Sundays and Fridays to God in a church with many brethren but that’s not so hard but God consider our relation to Him when we are alone. Those who are serious in prayer in their personal life maintain perfect spiritual health. After all prayer is not some religious chanting but it is talking to the living God.Jesus had personal prayer and for that He left everyone and found a place to have a quiet time to God.
He Prayed without ceasing
Do we know it is the command of God that we should pray without ceasing (Luke 18:1) and it is the will of God that we should continue to pray 1 Thess 5:17-18? In Luke 6:12 we read that …. In those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. It was not for one day but He went to the mountain for many days to pray. In Christian life it has several seasons and in one of the season according to the guidance of Holy Spirit we must only pray. It was the season for prayer. In those days He prayed. Jesus was not going on healing everyday but some days He only prayed. True motivation for prayer comes from God. We don’t know when did Jesus go to the mountain may be in the morning, afternoon or evening but whatever time it may be He continued his prayer whole night and finished it on the next day. He continued the prayer until He received the answer and in the morning He got the reply from God. You might be praying in the night but expect the answer in the morning, do not stop your prayer in the middle of the night because God wants you to wait till the morning. Zachariah and Elizabeth prayed for several years for a child and in one fine morning the Angel of the Lord appeared him and said “ Your prayers have been answered”…Though they did not get any reply in their own time but God at his appointed time gave John to them. It is the human tendency to faint while praying for the same subject but let us not stop our prayers but continue to pray without looking for results but understanding the truth that the more we talk to God the more consistent and mature we become in the Lord.
He Prayed before deciding
Jesus had a very important decision to make and that is choosing Apostles from all his disciples. We exactly don’t know what Jesus prayed but through this Luke account Spirit is teaching us that we ought to be like Jesus in our life. When we face crucial circumstance where our decision is very crucial we must seek the counsel of God. We do it when there is a marriage proposal or may be seeking for Jobs other than this material things do we approach Him to seek His will? Jesus finished the prayer in the morning and when he came down he called his disciples to himself and chose 12 apostles from them…I was just thinking while reading this portion that Jesus received a reply of his
prayer and if you see the reply one will think that did God made any mistake because all the twelve apostles were not appropriate in the worldly standards. We have Peter, who will say, Christ is the Lord at one time and at another he denies what he said earlier. We have James and John who thinks they only deserve to sit on the left and right hand side of the Lord, we have doubting Thomas and last but not least Judas Iscariot, a devil. See the reply of prayer, in our eyes we may see Jesus did not receive a correct answer from God regarding choosing of Apostles and so He must go again and seek the counsel of God again in this matter…don’t we think and do that in our case? When God said to Abraham, give Isaac…He did not take his wife’s counsel rather got up in the morning and took his son with him. When we seek God’s counsel in any matter it is very important that we should not go for second opinion to anyone because what God said is perfect and there is no need to add any human knowledge to it. Even one of the Apostles was devil. God turned the works of the devil into great blessings to many and rest of Apostles turned the world upside down…world feared them because of their faith. Now you tell me did Jesus receive correct answer for his prayers? Yes He did! Our God is Awesome. His ways and thoughts are higher than ours. Let us take everything to Him in prayer.
Let us have personal prayer in our life because Jesus had it, we must not faint in our prayers but continue in faith even though we do not see results because Jesus did it and let us seek counsel of God in every matter because Jesus did it.. let us pray like Jesus Christ.
May God bless you
